January Month in Review

February 11, 2019

2019 is in full swing folks. We’re halfway through February. This weekend I hit up a new coffee shop (Hey, East Pole Coffee) cozied up in a corner with some tea and snacks and spent some time doing a January month in review.

It was really helpful to write down what strides I’ve made so far this year. One, because it’s good motivation to reflect on what I’ve accomplished and two because it gives me the momentum I need to stay the course.

I set up a recurring reminder on my phone and am going to have a month in review at the beginning of each month to review the past month. Last year I did quarterly reviews but I like the idea of a month in review. It keeps you more accountable.

Some strides I’ve made toward my goals in January:

Being more social: I’ve made my apartment too comfortable! Between that and being an introvert (not to be mistaken with shy or loner), it’s easy to want to stay in. However, I really value connecting with people and good conversation.

Since it’s HARD making friends as an adult I had to put myself out there. I tried new fitness classes, went to a book club, met up with folks for coffee and brunch, went to a game night event, and bonded over shopping (eh more like window shopping but still). Over the course of this month I’ve met a few cool people.

Volunteering: I (finally) volunteered. I found a women and children’s kitchen and helped serve lunch.

Financial Health: I increased what I was putting in savings and upped my 401K contribution. I was already meeting my employer’s match but wanted to set aside more.

Research Activity: I got a revise and resubmit for a paper that I started while I was in grad school. Since it involves an area of research that’s not my area I reached out to a fellow alum who could be a co-author. Fingers crossed it gets published.

Those are just some of the things I did. When I wrote everything down it was a pretty impressive list. I felt proud. And had I not made it, I would have underestimated how much progress I actually made.

Have you taken time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished this year? It’s probably more than you think. Let me know in the comments something you did in January that you’re proud of.
