Grad School

Beyond the Dissertation

March 13, 2017

Happy Monday Guys!

It snowed this weekend. What?! The time for snow was back in January/February. Not mid-March when we’re right on the heels of spring. This week is a check in. I’ve been working on my dissertation for pretty much every waking hour of the day (which Daylight Savings so inconsiderately stole one of). Things have been crazy busy but I’m making good progress on my dissertation. And thankfully so too, because my defense date is fast approaching. I can’t believe how quickly everything is happening.

To occasionally switch up my scenery (and try out new restaurants), I’d been going to a different cafe once a week to do some work.

It was fun (and delicious) while it lasted, but at the beginning of this month a friend of mine and I started meeting back up to work on writing our dissertations. We have been hammering it out y’all. We’re treating this like the full-time job that it is (working from 9:30-5 on Monday-Friday). This time around we figured we needed to up the intensity so we’re also meeting on Saturdays.

Since the space we normally meet at during the week isn’t open to the public on weekends, we’ve been meeting at a library at NC State and I love it.The place is awesome and since the past two weekends have bookended their spring break, it’s been nice and quiet. We’ll see how that changes in the coming weeks. As stressful as this year has been at times, I have to remind myself to enjoy this last stretch. The time is going by so quickly and I want to make sure that I really savor it.It’s so easy to complain about being in graduate school, and all of the sacrifices you have to make, but that’s life in general. Plus there are some pretty amazing things about graduate school.

For one, there’s the energy on a college campus. It’s always buzzing with some type of activity. There are new people to meet, different events being held, and opportunities to learn all kinds of things. You also have access to tons of different resources and technology. And can we talk about all of the discounts you get by flashing your student ID (Amazon Prime, Sam’s Club, movie tickets, ASOS, Madewell, etc.). Ah yes.A part of me is nervous about what my life will look like on the other side. Will I find being in the real world as exciting? Will the benchmarks for success be as clear cut? Will I find the same sense of accomplishment in being successful in my career that I found in being successful in school?

I have no idea the answers to any of these questions, but I’ll be finding out soon. Real soon.

Eek! Pray for me y’all.

I hope you guys have a great week!
